Abstract

Existential-phenomenological psychologists are not known for their faith in assessment (Spinelli, 1996a), particularly when such assessment is formal and slanted towards diagnosis, 'treatment' and prognosis. However, existential-phenomenological psychologists are working in public sector settings where decisions must be made regarding the match between client and approach to psychotherapy. Thus some sort of assessment is required. This paper is an attempt to look at what 'Assessment' means in these services, what different aspects of the assessment process entail, the issues that present to existential psychologists in particular and how they might engage in this work.
