Abstract

On working with people dealing with health problems we are constantly faced with the rise out of existential issues. Nora, caught by the violence of several opportunistic diseases, due to HIV, shows us how the unease of a sick person can go far beyond the pain, worries and problems caused by the disease in itself; like many other patients, Nora's unease wasn't a problem of "coping" with HIV, but a problem of coping with the "awareness" (or "truth") brought on by the evidence of her finitude. More than simply presenting a case study, my intention is to reinforce the insufficiency of the purely mechanical psychological interventions on health contexts and show how the existential paradigm is pertinent to, and suitable for, work in such contexts.
