A phenomenological approach is used much more widely within various disciplines than we expect - at times the phenomenological component is not very obvious or is altogether hidden, and the practitioners and theorists who use it are not always aware of it.

The papers collected in this issue show something of the wide spectrum of themes where such an approach is employed, either openly or by implication. These papers include contributions from Israel and from Germany in the form of a further paper from the "Heidegger and Psychotherapy" Conference which was held in London in 1996. There are also contributions by Prof. Grieder and Prof. Rickman, both of City University, Trevor Butt of the University of Huddersfield, and Dr. Michele Crossley of Edge-Hill University College.

We are also glad to be able to include a number of papers by writers who have engaged themselves comparatively recently in the exploration of existential-phenomenological themes.
