1 There are difficulties in translating the German Ich-Du into English. Du is how lovers, family members and close friends address one another. Translating Ich-Du as I-Thou brings in theological overtones which are absent in the original while translating it as I-You loses the sense of the intimacy and immediacy of the German. Buber's English language translators and commentators are not in agreement on the best version. We use both, depending on the particular reference or translation we are using.
