The Editors are pleased, as the title of this edition of the Journal indicates, to be able to include a number of papers which address various aspects of the relationships between phenomenology and psychotherapy. Among these may be noted contributions by two distinguished members of our editorial board: Prof. Alec Jenner presents some interesting speculations on phenomenology and mental health and in particular on the situation of those persons who come to be called schizophrenic; Dr. John M. Heaton's paper provides a valuable opportunity to consider the nature of what he terms "the fundamental attitude of the therapist towards his/her patient".

Rosalind Pearmain's paper focuses on the relationship, for phenomenology, between the domains of language and experience, while Dr. Anthony Hazzard is concerned to explicate psychiatry as a "hermeneutic" project.

The Editors are glad to be able to publish further evidence of the scholarly debate which the Society for Existential Analysis seeks to promote in the form of Mick Cooper's paper "Modes of Existence" and Dr. Ernesto Spinelli's response to this and Prof. Emmy van Deurzen-Smith's The Survival of the Self which appeared in the January 1996 edition of this Journal.
